This intimate look at a day in the life of a wildland firefighter follows a Grayback Forestry crew into the forest to clear underbrush and perform forest maintenance. The private-sector contractors featured share their stories and love for what they do.

Americana Vice tagged along a with the Grayback crew as they set a controlled burn. Thomas, a Vice journalist, put on the uniform and did actual wildland firefighting work alongside the seasoned crew. Within six minutes he knew he was in for a hard day’s work.

“This is what they like to call "project work," aka the light stuff in between fires, and yet it was still some of the hardest most least-rewarding work I have ever tried to do in my life,” said Thomas. “They are literally the hardest working men in tree business.”

This short video is a great glimpse into what it takes to be a wildland firefighter. Take a look.
